Markets explained

The cricket markets you will see most

Most cricket bets fall into six markets. Start with match odds, then move to sessions once you can read the scoring rate.

  • 01

    Match odds

Pick the team that wins the match. In Tests there is a third outcome, the draw, which changes the prices a lot.

Check the playing XI before kick-off. One missing bowler can shift the price.

  • 02

    Toss winner

A straight call on which captain wins the coin toss. It settles before a ball is bowled.

It is close to a coin flip, so treat it as a small fun bet.

  • 03

    Session runs

Bet over or under a line for the runs scored by a set point, such as the end of the sixth or tenth over. These are often called fancy markets.

Compare the line with the ground's average powerplay score.

  • 04

    Top batter and bowler

Choose the player who scores the most runs or takes the most wickets for their side.

Batting position matters more than reputation in a short format.

  • 05

    Player runs

Over or under a runs line for one batter. Lines move with every ball that batter faces.

Openers face more balls, so their lines are higher for a reason.

  • 06

    Total sixes and boundaries

Bet on the number of sixes or fours in an innings or the whole match.

Small grounds and flat pitches push these totals up.

How does cricket betting work?

You pick an outcome, the platform shows a decimal price, and your return is stake multiplied by that price if you are right. A ₹500 bet at 1.80 returns ₹900, which is your ₹500 back plus ₹400 profit. If the bet loses, you lose the stake.

Prices reflect how likely the market thinks an outcome is. A team at 1.50 is a clear favourite; a team at 3.20 is the underdog. During a live match the price updates after almost every ball, and markets pause briefly when a wicket falls or a review is under way.

Bets are settled on the official result. If rain shortens a game, the result after the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method applies to match odds, while session and player markets follow their own rules about how many overs must be bowled.

02

Which cricket format is easiest for beginners?

T20 is the easiest place to start. A match takes about three and a half hours, there is always a winner or a Super Over, and the scoring patterns repeat, so session lines are easier to judge. Tests take longer to read because weather and the draw come into play.

ODIs sit in between. Fifty overs gives the batting side time to recover from a bad start, so early wickets move the price less than they do in T20.

03

What changes cricket odds during a match?

Wickets move the price most, followed by the run rate against the required rate. Before the match the toss, pitch report, weather and confirmed playing XI matter. In Indian evening games, dew often makes the ball harder to grip, which tends to help the side batting second.

  • Pitch report: dry surfaces help spinners as the match goes on
  • Dew in night games usually favours the chasing side
  • Overcast skies help swing bowlers early in the innings
  • An injury to a front-line bowler shortens the batting side's price
  • Impact Player substitutions in the IPL can change the batting depth
  • Boundary size at the venue affects totals and sixes markets

Cricket Betting: your questions answered

Short answers to what new players ask us most.

Still unsure? Ask the Wazir Win team

What is a session bet in cricket?

A session bet is an over or under bet on the runs a team will score by a set point in the innings, such as the end of the sixth over. If the line is 52 and you back over, the team needs 53 or more by that over for you to win.

What happens to my bet if rain stops play?

Match odds follow the official result, including results decided by the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method. If the match is abandoned with no result, match bets are usually void and stakes are returned. Session and player bets are settled only if the required overs were completed.

Can I bet while the match is live?

Yes. Live markets stay open during play and update after almost every ball. They pause for a few seconds after wickets, reviews and boundaries, then reopen at the new price.

Is the toss market really 50/50?

The toss itself is a coin flip, so prices sit close to evens on both captains. It suits a small bet for fun more than a serious strategy.

Which cricket competitions can I bet on?

The IPL, WPL, ICC World Cups and Champions Trophy, Test, ODI and T20I series, and franchise leagues such as the Big Bash, SA20 and The Hundred, along with selected domestic matches.
