Using the numbers
What do these numbers mean for betting?
- Read a live score against the venue's own par, not the league's. 190 is a par at an average ground, but a weak total at Eden Gardens and a strong one at MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk).
- Don't overrate the toss. Across the league, toss winners won 51% of decided matches, almost exactly a coin flip.
- Use the powerplay column to sanity-check a 6-over session line before you take Yes or No.
- Treat a single venue's percentages as a lean. Twenty-odd matches is a small sample, and pitches change from season to season.
Method and source
How we calculated these figures
- Every IPL match from 2023 to 2026 in Cricsheet's ball-by-ball records, the seasons played under the Impact Player rule. The season trend goes back to 2019.
- Scoring averages use only full 20-over matches: no DLS adjustment, no washout, no reduced overs. Super overs are ignored.
- The powerplay figure is runs, including extras, in overs 1 to 6 of the first innings.
- Chase and toss win rates count matches with a winner decided without DLS.
- A venue is listed only with at least 15 matches in the period, and smaller samples still swing easily, so treat a single venue's percentages as a lean, not a rule.
